Skegby Colts - Old News

20th October

Sunday, 10.30 its so cold, even penguins are jumping up and down to keep warm and Dave wants us to go training...is he mad? Despite the snot freezing temperatures the majority of the team battled to the training grounds to be met with an array of cones and tape. It looked more like a massive dot to dot than a football training session but once you had a brief off Dave, the tasks seemed clear enough. For the next hour, Skegby Colts were put through their paces and the only thing missing was the foot tapping music that you see in all the rest of the great soccer films while they are training, not that the wives would of heard it as they retreated for a good gossip into the biggest, warmest car.
The training must have worked well becuase Skegby set the pace in the early minutes with a goal from Liam. Certainly a different team that played yesterday and we all hope it had nothing to do with the fact the opposition were a year younger and a foot shorter in some cases!
Todays game seemed to be 40 minutes of new skills being found. James seems to have developed an elastic arm capable of throwing a ball half way across the pitch which will be very useful indeed if Skegby Colts remember to move into some space to receive it! Christopher was a new found star too, those dangly legs were now a fine tuned running and shooting machine with lots of shots on goal resulting in 5 hits at the cost of £2 each to his dad, (we suspect Chris was holding back until money was mentioned!)
Luke seems to have dropped his unofficial 3 foot rule (not getting closer than that to any opposing player) to 2 feet and is now close enough to have a swipe at the ball and make a difference. Several balls made one third the length of the pitch due to the efforts of lanky Luke. Jow was up to his usual standard of getting stuck in and obvioulsy had his usual dose of determination pills this morning. Best acrobatic and gymnastic award must go to Greg who's amazing backward dive (caused by a goal kick from 6 feet away into his chest) was the best we have EVER seen. It looked like someone had put the poor kid in a rather large catapualt and flinged him out the goal area. Liam managed to score 2 goals with several good runs over half the length of the pitch and a few fine exmaples of passing to Chris. Chris had one pass to Liam that was only a foot or so long that resulted in Liam scoring, which could of easily been mistaken for Liam nicking the ball off Chris but we all know the would NEVER happen! Lucas the star defender....eerr....ooops...ok, my son....had a good game with some great runs chasing after Quarry Dale and clearing the ball, but as yet still refusing to lean into players when running next to them as instructed, except when playing with me, the little bugger! Kyle showed improvement in his game today with a few "get stuck in there" tackles which resulted in him and the QuarreyDale player on the floor, an impressive effort which needs a little more balance for him to stay in the game but a great effort all the same. Tyrell made his presence felt on the pitch today, vocally and physically with a few more "wild child" swipes at the ball and all the ones he connected with certainly travelled a fair distance. Richard managed to find his pushing ability and demonstrated that defence is his game and using determination to describe his skills is very apt. Fortunately Rory had a reasonably quiet day today with only one goal being let in and hardly any other activity other than that. So, well done to all players with a final score of 7-1 to Skegby Colts........COME ON YOU GREENS!....and whites. Mention must also be made of Daves hat...nice colour but what shape is that supposed to be?

19th October

The day started well with 90% of the team circumnavigating Mansfield before getting to the ground. Finally the team arrived in its entirety to a lop sided and oddly sized pitch. The temperature was not in the favourable area of the scale but warm up and motivational speech seemed to raise the team’s spirits.
The game started well until Mansfield Athletic scored in the early minutes and then heads dropped as mistakes rose one after the other.
The first half was predominately played in Skegbys end with several passes to Mansfield Athletics half not being picked up by anyone, try as they might, the game seemed destined to be in Skegby’s half.
The frustration showed as Dave paced up and down the line shouting advice to deaf ears. No one ran for space and passes were to no one in particular or the opposition. Even kick off, which Skegby had plenty of practice with having lost 10-1, didn’t go to plan. The kicks were too short and soon intercepted and swiftly taken to Skegby’s end to pick holes in the limited defence. Voice of the match must go to the father of Joe who’s “refeee, how many times has he got to kick him before you blow your whistle” comment was well founded.
The second half was a repeat performance of the first and changing ends seemed to be the only way Skegby could say they spent anytime in Mansfields end.
Players worthy of mention include Christopher who’s dazzling pass down the line to Liam who then went on to score, was perfect. A textbook example of team spirit and co-ordination. Man of the match goes to Tyrell who despite refusing to use his hands, made an admirable second attempt even when injured by having the wind knocked out of him and getting back up.

Man of the match goes to Christopher who’s “crazy leg crane” approach of travel certainly got him in the right place at the right time. A well deserved score of 2-1 to Skegby (with a little help from an own goal by the opposition which was greatly welcomed). Liam was the other goal scorer with several other fantastic shots on goal. Once again, Greg the mighty defender was seen diving in (sometimes literally) at every opportunity and certainly deserves full marks for effort, determination and results. Rory seems to have come on in leaps and bounds since we last saw him play and provided us with an excellent display of hand work with a few awesome kicks past the centre line. Richard scores heavily again in the speed stakes for chasing the ball, and we all wait with baited breath to see what he will do with it once he gets there, if only the opposition wasn’t so fast at getting to him! Luke is making his presence known on the pitch with a few brief moments of stardom, we knew it was in there somewhere! The hunt still goes on for the lead weights attached to James boots but then they come in handy for those long goal kicks, and having your pocket money performance related to football as your Dad is the coach probably doesn’t help.Tyrel demonstrated an amazing ability to clear several players out the way and clear the ball into the next postcode, although telling him to “hold that thought” until the opposing team has the ball might be a good idea. I can not say good things about Lucas because I am his Dad and that wouldn’t be fair so his impartial mother said he played great! Good efforts all round and if I have not mentioned you then cross my palm with silver and I will add you in! Minimum marks go to the oppositions coach who thought it would be a good idea to tell one of his players to push a Colt out the way just as he was running past his mother!…..not a good move! You should of heard the heated debate after he run off! We all look forward to next weeks match, not so much me as I have to coach it!…and there was me thinking linesman was difficult enough!

12 October 2002

Due to the other team being on redbull by the case load, Skegby Colts lost their match today 12-0.(12 October 2002). Man of the match very deservedly goes to Greg who's flying tackles, half nelsons and neck holds kept the defence together. There has been a suggestion of having a medal for man of the match instead of the trophy because the trophy is actually bigger than some of the players!
